Handrail Options

Handrails are used to provide security and support by giving a safe handhold when climbing stairs and also when walking around porches and decks. Handrails are suitable for both external and internal purposes; exterior handrails are used for outdoor steps, porches and decks while interior handrails are used for staircases and in bathrooms by bathtubs and showers to provide support for individuals with disabilities.
  1. Wood

    • Wood handrails are quite common and often used for steps, porches and decks. They are not as durable as metal handrails but have a more sophisticated look with quality design and construction. Most wooden handrails are hand made, and the balustrades are carved into various designs and shapes that can be both elegant and elaborate. Wooden handrails are made from a variety of types of wood, including oak, mahogany, pine, beech, fir and cherry wood.

    Metal

    • Metal handrails are made from a variety of materials such as aluminum, steel, brass and iron. Metals are used to make some of the most durable types of handrails and are often used for exterior balustrades since they can withstand the outdoor elements better than other types of rails. The malleability of metals makes this type of handrail suitable for handrails with deep angles and curved staircases. Additionally metal handrails are low maintenance and last longer than both vinyl and wood handrails.

    Vinyl

    • Vinyl handrails are commonly used for both residential and commercial purposes and are one of the most economical handrail options. Vinyl handrails are low maintenance as they are durable and easy to clean. This type of handrail is not susceptible to rotting, rusting, warping, splintering or cracking. Many vinyl balustrade manufacturers offer warranties that cover a long-term period of ownership or even offer lifetime warranties on vinyl handrails. They also come in a variety of colors and styles to choose from.

    Composite

    • Composite handrails are made from 50 percent recycled plastic and 50 percent recycled wood. The plastic is on the outer part of the wood to shield it from moisture, which prevents the wood from rotting, and also guards it from pests and termites. Composite handrails are low maintenance and resistant to corrosion. Moreover they do not contain any toxic substances and are less slippery than vinyl handrails, which makes them safer to use.
