How to Get Cubic Feet for Concrete

For a home renovation such as a patio, room or garage, or other type of work you are doing, you will need to determine the volume of concrete needed for the floors or other areas to be poured. To compute cubic feet for the concrete, use one of two methods. One is to read your architectural plan and take your measurements from it. The other way is to use the tape measure to get your dimensions from the site itself. Once you have the raw figures, use the basic volume formula.

  Measure the area for the concrete with a ruler on the architectural plan and multiply each measurement by the scale. For example, if the scale is 1:12, each inch of your drawing comes to 1 foot for your project. If you are working on site, take your measurements directly with the tape measure.

  Multiply the dimensions together. For instance, if your dimensions are 23 feet in width, 17 feet in length and 1 foot deep, the total volume is 391 cubic feet.

  Add about 10 percent for waste. In the example above, the added amount is 39 cubic feet, raising your total to 430 square feet.

  Convert the figure to cubic yards, should that be more convenient. Cubic yards are employed frequently in concrete construction. To compute, divide your figure by 27. Using the figure in step 3, the result is 15.93 or around 16 cubic yards.
