Outdoor Deck Options

If yours is a good-sized yard, consider creative deck options. Not only is this a functional addition to your home, but a decorative one, as well. There are numerous designs and material choices from which to choose. Educate yourself about your options, so that you can choose the best one for your space.
  1. Deck Materials

    • A wooden deck is a natural and relaxing addition to a home.

Wood is one of the more commonly-used deck materials. It is natural, inviting, and blends well with both interiors and exterior elements. The downside is the maintenance, as wood must be water-proofed, stained and re-stained often. If you live in a damp climate, the wood may rot and areas may need to be replaced after a few years of use.

New composite deck materials available now look and feel very much like wood and do not have the upkeep that wood does. Many offer 10 to 25-year guarantees and are easily cleaned and maintained. No painting, staining or waterproofing is necessary. The deck materials have the appearance of real wood but no splinters or chipping.

Also, a concrete patio can be easily turned into a wood composite deck with the use of composite tiles that are quickly and easily snapped together. The interlocking base provides air flow and drainage for easy upkeep and water flow.

    Deck Design

    • There are hundreds of deck designs available in books, magazines and online. Review them carefully and decide which plan best fits the overall design of the house, the slope of the land, the materials to be used and your budget. The size of the deck depends on the shape desired and the land available. Also, consider the use of the deck area and whether it will be used for just the home occupants or also large gatherings and social functions. The design also needs to include any storage areas needed.

    Extras

    • Provide plenty of room for entertaining and cooking equipment on your new deck.

Keep in mind all the extras you can add to your new deck. A hot tub, built-in bar, fire pit, outdoor BBQ or kitchen, and awnings are all fun additions that make the area warm and inviting and perfect for entertaining and family gathering. Just remember to include the items and additions you want when planning your budget.

    Furniture

    • When planning the furniture for your new deck, remember to take the interior of your house into consideration. The room next to the deck should flow to the outside in a natural, balanced manner. Do not change styles abruptly. For example, it you have a beautiful home filled with antiques, you wouldn't go with ultra modern outdoor furniture.
