Types of Carports

Building your own carport at home is not as difficult as it seems. You first need to identify what type of carport design best suits your home. Carports range from combinations of steel poles and tarpaulin roofs to sturdier cement counterparts with metal sheets as roofs. Learn the various types of carports and assess which one you can easily put up at your home.
  1. Prefabricated Metal Canopies

    • Prefabricated metal canopies are made of galvanized steel and are often semi-permanent additions to your home. Minimal assembly is required after delivery since the actual metal frames are already constructed and you only need to put the roof on top of the frame. Prefabricated metal canopies can withstand the natural elements and are sturdy enough to last several years. They look like party tents but are made of steel instead of plastic and the roofs are made up of tarpaulin or polyethylene covers.

    Party Tents

    • Party tent carports are essentially party tents that are large enough to cover your car. These are portable since the actual carport is light enough to carry from one place to another. The poles are made of polyethylene and the cover is made of a single polyester sheet. This type of carport is not the sturdiest type but is easy to install.

    Aluminum Carports

    • Aluminum carports are like their prefabricated metal cousins but instead of galvanized steel, it uses aluminum rods as its frame. This makes the carport lightweight yet more durable than the party tent variety. If you want something that is easy to relocate and yet sturdier than the typical party tent, then consider using an aluminum carport. Aluminum carports are also rust-resistant, compared to regular steel carports.

    Extension Garage

    • If you want a more permanent carport for your home and you have enough space in your lawn anyway, consider building an extension garage. Extension garages made of concrete will definitely stand the test of time and natural elements. Extend your existing garage by at least eight meters and affix some plastic or polycarbonate sheets to serve as its roof. Match the style of the extension garage to the rest of your home.
