How to Attach a Folding Table Top to a Wall

A wall-mounted folding table top helps you maximize your living space since the table can be moved out of the way when not in use. Because the surface must support weight, it's vital to attach the table brackets into the wooden studs inside the wall for greater support. Mounting into plaster or drywall only increases the risk that the table will come crashing down. Use a stud finder to locate the studs inside the wall before you begin this project. The table top typically comes with all mounting hardware. Install at any comfortable height suited to your purpose.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the stud finder against the wall in the desired space for mounting your table. Slide the stud finder left to right to locate studs in the wall. Mark these positions with a pencil.

    • 2

Measure from the floor to the desired height for your table. A table for eating in the kitchen might be 30 inches high, although a table for crafts, ironing laundry or some other activity performed while standing might be 48 inches high, or higher for taller individuals.

    • 3

Hold the carpenter's level against the wall at the two pencil marks. Adjust the tool until it reads level, then draw a line along the flat edge of the level with your pencil. This is your guide mark for installing a level table.

    • 4

Hold the folding table against the wall with the help of a friend. Adjust the table brackets until the top edge of the table is even with your pencil line.

    • 5

Make a pencil mark through the screw holes in the two brackets under the folding table, then set aside the table.

    • 6

Shut off the electricity to the room at the circuit breaker as a safety precaution before drilling into the wall.

    • 7

Drill a pilot hole at each pencil mark for the screws using a drill bit slightly smaller than the screws supplied with your table. For example, if your table comes with 3/8-inch screws, use a 1/4-inch drill bit.

    • 8

Align the table brackets with the drilled holes while a friend holds the table against the wall.

    • 9

Fasten the table to the wall with the supplied screws and your screwdriver.

    • 10

Restore power to the room at the circuit breaker.
