How to Measure a Shed's Footprint

The "footprint" of an object, refers to the amount of floor space or area something covers. For example, your two-story home might measure at 3,600 square feet, but the home's footprint is only 1,800 square feet --- half of 3,600 square feet --- because that is how much land space the house takes up. Regardless of the reason why you need to know how much floor space of something, determining the footprint of any object or structure is as simple as taking measurements and multiplying.

     Measure the length of the shed with your tape measure. In this example, the length shall be 15 feet long.

     Measure the width of the shed with your tape measure. In this example, the width shall be 10 feet wide.

     Multiply the length by the width to determine the total square feet. For this example, 15 * 10 = 150 square feet.

   • 4

     Divide the square feet by nine to determine the total square yards. For this example,150 / 9 = 16.67 square yards.
