Research areas within the suburb that you like. Investigate the amount of property taxes, what the homes are worth, what school district the neighborhood is in and how far your commute would be to your job. Other things to look at include crime rates and population information.
Work with a Realtor who can help you find homes that are within your price range. If you are coming from the city, chances are you may not be familiar with which homes are for sale in the neighborhoods you are interested in.
Make a list of the features of a home in the suburbs that you are looking for. Specify the number of bedrooms and bathrooms you want, garage space, square footage and yard space. Your specifics will help your Realtor narrow down the selections for you.
Note the things that you like or dislike about the homes you see in the suburbs. Or, if you happen to visit schools because you plan on raising your children in the suburbs, write down which schools you like or don't like. All of these variables help you make a final decision about where you relocate to in the suburbs.
Weigh the pros and cons of your options. If you are really anxious to move out of the city, but you do not find your first-choice home, you might still be willing to move into your second- or third-choice home just to settle in the suburbs.
Calculate the moving costs from the city to the suburbs. Consider the amount of money it costs to pack up your furniture and belongings, rent a moving truck or hire movers. Keep in mind that movers might charge you by the hour or by the distance for the drive between moves.
