How to Build Your Own Plywood Laundry Cabinets

One of the easiest ways to customize your laundry room and add additional storage space is to include some type of shelving. Although you can purchase cabinets and shelving that is already put together, it is generally cheaper to build things on your own. Because the laundry room is an out-of-the-way area, you can build a set of plywood shelves without concern as to whether you have a laminated finish, which means you can save some money in comparison with buying prefinished and show-quality cabinets.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine where you want your cabinets to be in the laundry room. Use a tape measure, pencil and level to draw and outline of your cabinet area to use as a reference point when building the actual cabinets. Ensure that the vertical lines are plumb and the horizontal lines are level.

    • 2

Measure for the back piece of your cabinet (the one that will mount on the wall), and mark those measurements on the piece of plywood with a tape measure, pencil and carpenter's square. Snap a chalk line across the board for long cuts, and make those cuts with the circular saw. Repeat the process for your sides, top and bottom. Measure to overlap the side pieces with the top and bottom, or vice versa.

    • 3

Attach the pieces together. Apply wood glue to any edges where the pieces will join together, such as where the sides attach to the back piece, or the top pieces attach to the side pieces and the back piece. Join the pieces together after you have applied the glue, and use the finish nailer to drive finish nails every few inches to lock everything in place.

Decide whether you want shelving within your cabinet. Measure the interior of the cabinet to determine the width and depth of the shelf piece, and cut it out of plywood. Apply wood glue to the edges, and slide it into place within the cabinet, and nail it to the sides to lock it in place.

Determine the location of the studs on your laundry wall with a stud finder. Use your level line on the wall as a reference point and hang your cabinet in place. Attach the cabinet to the wall by screwing the wood screws through the cabinet and into the studs behind the wall. Attach two screws at the top of the cabinet first to hold it in place, and finish securing it with more screws every few inches vertically.
