How to Transport a Prebuilt Storage Barn

Purchasing a prebuilt storage barn is a wise choice for those with little time and carpentry experience; however, moving such a structure is a challenging task. The larger the barn and the greater the distance over which the barn must be moved, the higher the chance of damaging the building or losing it altogether. Those without experience or the proper equipment should contract a house-moving contractor to avoid costly errors.

Instructions

    • 1

Brace the storage barn with 2-inch by 4-inch boards at the studs, door frames and window openings. Make X-shaped braces by measuring the diagonal distance between each stud and frame and cutting a board to that length. Subtract 3 1/2 inches from that length to mark and cut a second board. Cut the beams to a 45-degree angle with a miter saw. Wedge one board diagonally and cut the second board in half. If the two halves will not pressure fit against the wedged board in the opposite direction to complete the X, attach the pieces with nails, wood glue or screws for transit. Create an X-frame between opposite corners of the floor to help the barn maintain its base shape.

    • 2

Insert a jack under each corner post and raise the barn. Enlist three friends to help raise all sides of the barn at an even rate until it reaches a height of approximately 5 inches.

    • 3

Slide PVC poles under the raised barn every 4 feet. Enlist several able-bodied friends to help push the barn up the ramp of a flat-bed trailer. Use ratcheting ties to prevent the scaffolding poles from rolling and secure the barn to the trailer with rope.

    • 4

Drive the barn to the site and back the trailer up to the edge of the foundation. Lower the ramp and roll the barn onto the foundation. Raise the corner posts with jacks and remove the poles. Lower the barn onto the slab and remove the jacks.

    • 5

Disassemble and remove the X-braces inside the barn.
