How to Close in a Garage for Another Bedroom

Sketch the home's exterior. Plan how you will disguise the fact that a garage once occupied the space. Design the front facade with brick or siding to match the house. Create a plan to blend the garage door space seamlessly with all overhangs and house guttering. Plan to dig up asphalt or concrete driveway material leading to the former garage door as well.

Measure all of the interior and draw a floor plan. Create the interior around any new windows you desire for the bedroom. Sketch the space to include a closet, built-in bookshelves or a media wall unit. Draw the new door, a new fireplace and routes for electrical wiring. Plan the wiring to come through open wall studs and down through the attic space, for example.

Make any needed repairs and level the floor before installing studs. Fix any roof leaks, add new asphalt shingles and make sure the garage floor is ready for new flooring. Take down the main garage door and its tracking. Construct the interior framework using 2-by-4-inch boards. Use deeper boards to enclose the garage door opening, if needed.

Construct the exterior brick facade or siding to cover the garage door. Take down old garage exterior wall lights or motion lights to create a new look. Be careful to create a tight seal at the bottom of the door opening to prevent ground water leaks.

Finish up the interior and add flooring. Run electrical wiring to new light fixture areas and outlets. Insulate between exterior studs, including the old garage door space. Nail up drywall, finish with drywall tape and joint compound, and paint the space. Install flooring last to prevent paint spills or scratching of the new floor.
