How to Soften Glue Containing Asbestos for Removal

Asbestos is a fibrous, incombustible material that was often used in building construction, electrical insulation, building materials, fireproofing and chemical filters. The mineral fiber is no longer allowed due to health risks and concerns, such as respiratory problems and lung cancer. It is recommended to remove any asbestos-based glue and material from a home to prevent health problems. The key to removal is moisture and wetting the glue. Warm water softens the glue and prevents the asbestos fibers from becoming airborne.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a ventilator mask over your face. Exposure to asbestos dust can be harmful to your health, and has been linked to some types of cancers and long-term respiratory problems. Also wear a pair of rubber gloves to prevent asbestos from getting on your hands and subsequently into your mouth or body.

Seal off and isolate the room. Close all vents, doors and windows and tape plastic over the gap between the door and floor.

    • 3

Apply warm water to a sponge. Wet the glue using the sponge. Be generous with the water, allowing it to really soak in. Many glues contain water-based adhesives. The warm water dilutes the glue and prevents the asbestos particles from being released into the air.

    • 4

Wipe up the softened glue using a cloth. Throw the used cloth into a sealed container for proper removal. Contact an experienced building contractor or waste management company in your area for proper information on how to dispose of items that have been exposed to asbestos.

Continue to apply warm water to the glue until all areas have completely softened and been removed using a cloth and sponge.
