Classes of Asbestos Removal

Asbestos, a naturally occurring mineral favored for its heat and chemical resistance and strength, has been used for centuries to fortify everything from fabric to car parts. In spite of its many uses, asbestos also causes severe and even fatal health complications. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulate the use and removal of asbestos to protect citizens from unnecessary exposure and health risks.
  1. Class I

    • Class I is the most hazardous class of asbestos abatement, or asbestos removal. Class I abatements include removal of thermal system insulation (TSI) and any ACM (asbestos-containing material) or PACM (presumed asbestos-containing material) surfacing material, whether applied by spray or trowel.

    Class II

    • Class II asbestos abatement includes removal of ACM other than TSI or surfacing material, including wallboard, roofing and flooring materials, including tiles and sheeting, siding materials and construction mastics.

    Class III

    • Class III asbestos abatement pertains to the repair and maintenance of thermal system insulation, ACM and PACM surfacing, where the materials may be disturbed, causing asbestos exposure.

    Class IV

    • Class IV asbestos abatement pertains to maintenance and repair on or around ACM and PACM without actual disruption of those materials. Class IV work also involves clean up of debris resulting from Class I - III removal projects.
