Finishing Products for Wood Barn Floors

Applying a coating to the floor of an antique barn helps to maintain the wood's natural appearance and extend its longevity. Choosing the best product involves determining the desired uses and appearance of your barn. Certain options provide a more rugged and hearty finish, while others are eco-friendly and offer a natural look.
  1. Polyurethane

    • The easiest and most common wood finishing product is an oil-based polyurethane. It provides a clear coating that turns amber with age and has a hardy finished surface. This moisture-resistant product is made up of synthetic resins and plasticizers. General application consists of applying the polyurethane in several coats, allowing for eight hours of cure time between each coat. The more coats are applied, the sturdier the end product will be.

    Enamel

    • Enamels have excellent durability. They are resistant not only to moisture, but also to household chemicals and motor oil. Unlike polyurethane, you can get a lasting finish by applying only the recommended two coats. Water-based enamels provide for easy cleanup, less toxicity and lower VOC ratings. If your barn is used as a shop, this high-gloss finish is the way to go.

    Linseed Oil

    • Linseed oil is the original nonchemical wood finisher. It is derived from flax seeds and is a natural preservative. One of linseed oil's drawbacks is its curing time. However, the longer drying process allows the oil to level and produce a smooth finished product. For the purist, linseed oil is a perfect nontoxic solution, providing a natural look that will weather with age.

    Carnuba and Beeswax

    • Waxes are a good choice for the environment and are easier to work with than linseed oil. Waxes provide a beautiful golden hue and do not require the use of respirators during application. Carnuba wax is suitable for higher-traffic areas, yet has a drying time of 24 to 48 hours. Beeswax is best used for medium-traffic areas and dries much faster. Waxes never require thinning, thus contributing to their eco-friendliness.
