How to Make Primitive Bricks

You can make primitive bricks with clay and mud just like the Egyptians did. Primitive bricks are made from clay dug from the ground and straw that is harvested and allowed to dry for a day. A mold must be made to shape the clay and straw before it drys in the sun and turns into a solid object. You can make the brick mold from wood. If you want to make primitive bricks you should follow these steps.

Gather clay and straw. Score a two foot by two foot swatch of clay with a stick and add water. Mix the water with the clay by stepping on both with your feet. Mix the two components until the clay is mushy. Cut the stalk of a cereal plant such as wheat and remove the plant's chaff and grain. This will yield a straw.

Make a mold for your primitive bricks. Cut two pieces of wood from a standard 2-by-4. Cut two pieces seven inches in length and two pieces twelve inches in length. Place the seven inch pieces on the ends of the mold and the twelve inch pieces inside the seven inch pieces for the sides. Nail the boards using nails and a hammer.

Mold the clay and straw. Shred the straw by pounding on it with a hammer and tearing it apart. Mix the straw with the clay. The amount of straw you need to mix with the clay will depend on the chemical make-up of the clay. You will find the right ratio of clay to straw after preforming the task of making primitive bricks a few times. Place the brick mixture into a mold to mold it into the traditional shape of a brick.

Use the elements to cure the primitive brick. Remove the brick from the mold and place it on the ground in an open area where the brick will receive direct sunlight. Leave the brick on the ground for ten days. The sun will bake it and glae the outside of the brick.
