How to Remove Termites Without Pesticides

Termites have plagued homeowners for as long as homes have been made from wood. Termites are small insects that feed on dead fiber products such as the lumber used to construct homes. As the termites feed, they move through the wood and leave gaps and craters that can lead to instability and permanent structure damage. Chemical pesticides often kill termites but they can harm humans and pets. You can save your home and remove termites without pesticides.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean away leaves and dead wood from around your home. Termites live in piles of foliage and wood around your property and keeping them away from your home minimizes the chance of infestation. Wear a pair of heavy leather gloves and rake up debris, scooping it into a garbage bag with a shovel.

Add 1 part boric acid with propylene glycol to 4 parts water and pour the solution into a garden sprayer. Pump up the sprayer and coat termite-infested areas in a coating of the acid solution. Re-spray every three days until no signs of termites remain.

    • 3

Brush a layer of orange oil over exposed wood surfaces. Orange oil contains D-Limonene, a chemical known to kill termites. Use a small paint brush, coating each exposed wood surface for optimum results.

Coat the area in a layer of diatomaceous earth. Diatomaceous earth is a natural product made from the shells of ancient fossils that penetrate the exoskeletons of the termites, causing death by dehydration. Pour the product over termite mounds and entrances to your home to kill termites before they invade your living space.
