Start-Up Grants for a Green Business

Green businesses strive to meet the triple bottom line: people, planet and profit. John Elkington, green entrepreneur and CEO of the independent think tank SustainAbility, coined the "green" term in 1994. Elkington describes a green business as one that takes into account ecological and social issues, as well the financial aspect of the business. The federal government, private foundations and state agencies offer grants to green business start ups and eco-preneurs.
  1. Funding for Eco-Friendly Businesses

    • Each year, the Environmental Protection Agency awards millions of dollars in grants to business start ups that provide green services and products. EPA grants allow start-up businesses to build new work sites with renewable materials or implement energy efficient upgrades to existing facilities. The Small Business Innovation Research grant program, administered by the U.S. Small Business Administration, is open to businesses that focus on alternative or renewable energy solutions and green energy technology.

    Innovative Ideas

    • The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Energy for America Program promotes renewable energy for agricultural producers and small businesses in towns with populations below 50,000. Grant monies allow start-ups to finance renewable energy systems and development assistance. The U.S. Small Business Administration, meanwhile, offers funds through its Small Business Technology Transfer program, which supports research and development for clean energy-based business start ups.

    Federal Funding

    • In 2009, the U.S. government created the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. ARRA utilizes state agencies to award grant monies to businesses that address energy efficiency and renewable energy options. These agencies offer grants for small businesses to support construction or renovation projects that include renewable energy sources, such as wind energy and solar power. The Catalog of Domestic Federal Assistance provides a comprehensive search of grants and funding available.

    Grant Applications

    • When filing an application for a grant, don't overlook the details and make sure all requirements are met. Carefully read the instructions prior to starting the grant proposal process. If possible, hire a qualified grant writer to prepare the application. Business owners who research all options, apply for grant monies and ultimately produce a winning grant proposal can increase their profits from both a financial and sustainability standpoint.
