New Jersey Geothermal Energy Grants

Opportunities for grant funding in New Jersey exist for projects that utilize geothermal energy, which is the thermal energy found beneath the Earth's surface. Depending on the grant, applicants can obtain money toward projects focused on geothermal electricity, geothermal heat pumps or geothermal direct use.
  1. Renewable Energy Grants

    • Renewable Energy Grants for geothermal electricity or geothermal heat pumps are available through the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act -- the legislation commonly known as "the stimulus." When applied to geothermal properties, these cash grants cover 10 percent of property costs. Commercial, agricultural and industrial entities are eligible.

Rural Energy for America Program Grants

    • Rural Energy for America Program Grants for geothermal electricity, geothermal heat pumps and geothermal direct use are available through the U.S. Department of Agriculture. REAP grants fund 25 percent of costs for renewable geothermal energy programs associated with agricultural producers and rural small businesses. Schools, local, state and tribal governments, rural electric cooperatives, and agricultural, institutional and public power entities are eligible for REAP grants.

    Tribal Energy Program Grant

    • Tribal Energy Program Grants for geothermal electricity and geothermal heat pumps are available through the U.S. Department of Energy. TEP grants issue funding of various amounts to projects that increase the energy sufficiency of tribal communities and foster economic growth and employment through energy technologies. In January 2011, the DOE announced that it would allocate up to $10 million that year for energy projects in tribal communities. Only tribal governments are eligible to receive TEP grants.
