How to Make Clay Flooring

Clay flooring, sometimes called "earthen flooring" or "adobe flooring," is a floor made from natural clay, sand to prevent cracking, and some type of binding agent such as straw or saw dust. A properly-made clay floor is durable, smooth and attractive. You can use clay flooring in an outbuilding or tool shed or even inside a home as an environmentally friendly construction material.

Instructions

    • 1

Place 3 parts natural clay to 1 part sand in a wheelbarrow, plus a couple handfuls of straw. The measurements do not have to be precise. Do not use modeling clay or synthetic clay. Mix the substances together using your hands or a large stick until all three ingredients are thoroughly mixed. You may have to moisten the clay with water to mix the substances then allow it to dry for a few days until it is back to its normal consistency.

    • 2

Form a ball of the mixture in your hand. Extend your arm and drop the ball onto the ground. If it breaks open or cracks, add more sand to the mixture. Repeat this process until the ball can be dropped without splitting upon impact.

    • 3

Spread this clay, sand and straw mixture over your floor so that it is about 3 inches thick; the measurement doesn't have to be precise. Mix more sand, clay and straw as necessary. Allow the floor to dry.

    • 4

Make another batch of clay, sand and straw. This time, however, the straw should be chopped so that it is very fine. Alternatively, you can use sawdust, which is naturally fine and won't be as visible as straw. Sawdust may be available for free or a small fee at lumber yards.

    • 5

Spread the second layer of flooring. It should be at least 1 inch thick, but can be thicker if you'd like. A thicker clay floor will retain more heat in the wintertime. Smooth the floor using a hand trowel. Start at the farthest corner of the room and work your way towards the exit to avoid walking on the wet clay.

Embed pieces of tile or decorative glass marbles in the clay for decoration purposes. You can line marbles along the edge of the wall, for example, or use them to create pathways between rooms.
