Care of Rammed Earth Walls

Rammed earth is a construction technique that mixes and compresses components such as damp subsoil, sand, gravel, clay and lime into solid walls or blocks. This method has been used to construct homes, castles and other structures for thousands of years, according to the University of Southern California School of Architecture. Walls made of rammed earth are cost-effective, environmentally friendly, pest-proof and fire-resistant. They become more durable with age and require virtually no regular care to maintain.

Instructions

    • 1

Allow exterior rammed earth walls to dry and cure for at least 10 rain-free days before applying sealants or paints. Use a clear sealant for a natural look, if desired.

    • 2

Use rain gutter downspout extensions to direct rainwater away from exterior rammed earth walls. If exposed to frequent rainfall, rammed earth can sustain slight erosion damage over time.

    • 3

Paint or seal interior rammed earth walls with glossy paint or sealant to make them easier to clean. Apply two or three coats of the paint or sealant as directed on the product label.

    • 4

Wipe hand prints, smudges and grime from interior rammed earth walls with a soft sponge. Moisten the sponge in a solution of warm water and mild liquid soap.
