How to Convert a Deck Into an Insulated Floor

Insulating your deck is a good choice if you find the surface becomes uncomfortably cold underfoot during early spring and late fall. Installing fiberglass insulation is a straightforward operation that can be completed in a single afternoon, and requires few tools. Use double-faced insulation to avoid exposing the fluffy insulating material to the elements and to increase its longevity.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on a dust mask, safety goggles and a hard hat to protect yourself from both fiberglass particles and the hard underside of your deck. Wear gloves, a long-sleeved shirt and pants to protect your arms and legs from insulation itch.

    • 2

Crawl under the deck and push a piece of double-faced insulation batting up between two of the joists. Position the insulation so the vapor-retardant side is upward and the side with flanges faces you. Staple the flanges to the joists to secure the insulation in place.

Install subsequent pieces of insulation batting the same way as the first. Cut strips of insulation that are too long with a utility knife, rather than attempting to fold them. Avoid compressing the insulation, as this reduces its effectiveness.
