How to Replace Hardwood Flooring by Cubic Feet

If you are planning to put in a new hardwood floor, having the right measurements is essential, both for ordering the flooring as well as installing it. While the majority of retailers sell hardwood flooring by square feet, some lumber yards or retailers may sell it by cubic feet instead. You'll have to first get the square footage of the room, and then you will need to know the thickness of the flooring you plan to use in order to calculate the cubic foot measurement.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of the room with a measuring tape. Have a friend help you to get a more accurate measurement. Write down the measurements on a piece of paper.

    • 2

Determine the square footage of the room by multiplying the length of the room by the width. For example, if a room is 12 feet long and 10 feet wide, the square footage of the room would be 120 square feet.

    • 3

Measure the height of the wood flooring with a measuring tape and write this measurement down as a percentage of a foot. For example, if a board is 3 inches tall, it would roughly measure out to be 0.25 feet.

    • 4

Multiply the square footage of the room by the height of the wood in feet to determine the cubic foot measurement. Using the example of 120 square feet and the height of the wood as 0.25 feet, the result would be 30 cubic feet.

    • 5

Add on a 10 percent overage to account for damaged or incorrectly cut wood. Returning to the example, you would need to order 33 cubic feet to replace the hardwood flooring in a room that was 120 square feet in size.
