How to Install T-Molding in Laminate Flooring

Moldings can finish the look and function of a laminate floor. Laminate floors are often installed in areas that adjoin other types of flooring. The laminate floor should have a gap between it and the other type of flooring for expansion. T-molding allows homeowners to cover this gap and protect the flooring from damage as people walk over the area. Installing T-molding is not difficult but it can take a day or two before you can walk over the molding.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the transition space between the laminate flooring and the other type of flooring with a measuring tape. You will need ¼-inch expansion space on each side of the bottom area on the T-molding.

    • 2

Measure the doorway where the T-molding transition will be located. Transfer these measurements to the T-molding with a pencil or marker.

    • 3

Place the molding on a miter saw and position it so the measurement mark lines up with the saw blade. Cut the molding.

    • 4

Vacuum the space between the floorings. This should remove any dirt, dust or debris that will make it difficult to properly install the molding.

    • 5

Apply polyurethane glue on the bottom of the T-molding. Set the molding in place in the transition. Press down so the glue touches the subfloor. Allow the glue to dry for 24 hours prior to walking on the T-molding.
