Glossy vs. Non-glossy Laminate Flooring

Laminate is a flooring option that offers the look of stone or wood without the high maintenance and wear problems of these materials. Laminate flooring comes in a wide variety of patterns and designs for any décor. In addition, laminate may be glossy or non-glossy. A look at the differences in these finishes can help to determine which finish is right for you.
  1. About Laminate Flooring

    • Laminate flooring generally has four layers: a base layer, an inner core, a design layer that gives it the look of wood or stone and a wear layer that provides a tough surface for everyday traffic. The layers are glued together for a durable and attractive flooring that is easy to maintain and lasts for years. The design layer is made with a high-resolution photo image of the wood grain or stone surface you desire. On top of this layer is the wear layer, a tough plastic coating that resists wear, stains and fading. High-quality laminate flooring is available in either a high-gloss finish or a matte finish, which is much less shiny.

    Advantages of High-gloss Finish

    • High-gloss finishes on laminate flooring are a laqyer of clear melamine. This high-gloss finish reflects light well, giving a room an attractive shine. High-gloss laminate is also easy to clean with a broom or vacuum and damp mopping. High-gloss finishes retain their good looks for many years without the refinishing that is required with hardwood flooring.

    Disadvantages of High-gloss Finish

    • High-gloss laminate flooring tends to show flaws and dents more than lamiinates with non-glossy finishes. In addition, high-gloss surfaces dust and dirt are more conspicuous on high-gloss floors.

    Advantages of Matte Finish

    • The tough, clear wear layer on laminate flooring can also be finished with a matte finish that offers less shine and light reflection than the high-gloss type. This finish may look better with more casual décor styles that do not require the luxurious look that high-shine surfaces provide. Non-glossy finishes offer a subtler look that adds to the warm, homey quality of the room. Matte finishes also hide dirt and dust better.

    Disadvantages of Matte Finish

    • Non-glossy finishes like the matte style do not offer the higgher level of light reflection in the room that high-gloss clear coats provide. Soil tends to stick more to non-glossy surfaces and may require cleaning more often. They can become dull and drab from soap or cleaning solution residues. Even plain water can leave a film that dulls the surface. Using the least amount of water and cleaners can help to keep non-glossy finishes looking clear.
