How Can You Paint Over Flagstone Flooring?

Flagstone floors add an old-fashioned and outdoorsy look to homes. If you aren’t fond of the stone color of a floor, or you’re just tired of using special stone cleaners on it, you can paint over the flagstones. Floor paint, either acrylic or epoxy based, will work on flagstone floors. However, before application the floors must be clean and dull so the paint will stick.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the floor using 200-grit sandpaper in a floor sander until the surface is dull and not shiny.

    • 2

Vacuum up the stone dust. Mop the floor with stone cleaner and remove any oily or greasy spills on the floor. Allow the flagstone floor to dry completely.

    • 3

Paint in between the flagstones with a paintbrush. You can use the same color paint or a different color to set off the stones. Get into every nook and cranny with the brush.

    • 4

Pour paint into a tray, dip a roller into the paint and roll it over the top of the flagstones until they are covered with paint.

    • 5

Allow the floor to dry for at least 24 hours before you walk on it.
