How to Mix Sand & Portland Cement for a Shower

Installing a shower of any type starts with creating a sturdy base, which is called the shower pan. The shower pan consists of a wooden framework with a waterproof liner and a wire mesh on top for added durability. The entire structure is encased in cement to create a slab that the shower rests on. If desired, you can create your own shower pan mix using Portland cement and sand mixed together.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a wheelbarrow on a flat location and protect the flooring if needed, using a plastic tarp to catch any cement spills.

    • 2

Put on safety glasses and a dust mask before opening the bag of cement. It’s also a good idea to wear work gloves, since cement can irritate and burn the skin.

    • 3

Open a bag of Portland cement and pour it into the wheelbarrow. Add in five parts of sharp builder’s sand for the amount of cement contained in the bag.

    • 4

Mix the two ingredients well using a shovel. Use care when mixing not to stir up too much of the cement, which creates dust.

    • 5

Add water to the wheelbarrow by pouring in only 5 to 6 cups at a time. Mix the contents after each addition of water until the entire mixture is damp and holds together when you squeeze it in your hand. The mixture should not be muddy or soupy.

    • 6

Pour the mixture into the prepared shower area.
