Laying a Herringbone Pattern Tile

The classic herringbone pattern arranges rectangular tiles at 90-degree or 45-degree angles in a symmetrical fashion. The ratios of rectangles are generally 2:1—two times longer than the height. When laying a herringbone pattern, you need to establish baselines on your floor to follow. To get the correct herringbone pattern alignment, you also need proportional square or triangular tiles, depending on the herringbone pattern you wish to make. When laying tiles in a pattern, start along one edge of a wall or a baseline and work in small sections.

Things You'll Need

  • Rectangular tiles, 6-by-12-inch (for 90-degree or 45-degree herringbone pattern)
  • Square tiles, 6-inch (for 90-degree herringbone pattern)
  • Triangular tiles, 6-by-6-by-8.48 inches (for 45-degree herringbone pattern)

Instructions

  1. 90-Degree Herringbone Pattern

    • 1

Lay a 6-inch square tile in the corner of the room or at the beginning of a baseline.

    • 2

Place a 6-by-12-inch rectangular tile under the square vertically. The short end of the rectangular tile should be next to the square tile.

    • 3

Lay a 6-by-12-inch rectangular tile horizontally under the vertically tile previously laid. This tile and the one above it will form the shape of the letter L.

    • 4

Lay another square tile under the rectangular tile you just placed horizontally on the floor. Repeat the tile-laying process until you reach the other end of the room or the area you marked.

    • 5

Begin laying the second set of tiles. Next to the first square tile you placed on the floor, lay a rectangular tile vertically so the top ends are flush with each other.

    • 6

Place a rectangular tile horizontally under the tile you just placed. The tiles will look like there is a letter L sitting within another letter L.

    • 7

Lay a tile vertically under the right end of the tile previously laid. Continue laying horizontal and vertical tiles in an alternating fashion.

    45-Degree Herringbone Pattern

    • 8

Lay a 6-by-6-by-8.48 inch triangular tile in the corner of the room or at the beginning of a baseline so the 8.48-inch side touches the left side of the wall or baseline.

    • 9

Lay a second triangular tile under the first so it points in the same direction. Continue laying the triangular tiles along the wall or base line in the same fashion.

    • 10

Lay the second set of tiles. Place a 6-by-12-inch rectangular tile between the first and second triangular tiles you laid. The rectangular tile should point down at a 45-degree angle. Continue laying rectangular tiles between the triangular tiles in the same fashion, ensuring they all point down at a 45-degree angle, until you complete the row.

    • 11

Start the third row of tiles. Place a rectangular tile on the floor so one of the short ends touches the lower right side of the first rectangle you laid. The bottom short end of the tile on the left should be flush with the lower long end of the tile you just placed. The tile you just laid should point up at a 45-degree angle

    • 12

Fit the next rectangular tile into the triangular space below the tile you previously laid so it points up at a 45-degree angle. Continue laying the tiles in this fashion to complete this row. The consecutive rows will alternate between rectangular tiles angled up and down.
