How to Level an Uneven Floor Easily

For building and remodeling jobs, a level surface is a benefit and often necessary before installing the top layer of the floor. Concrete floors are notorious for having unlevel spots while wood floors can twist and flex over time to become unlevel as well. Leveling these floors can be done by patching the floor or by using newer, self leveling floor compounds. Patching compounds are difficult to work with and require extensive labor. Self leveling compounds can be the smart choice, and can be used for smoothing out uneven floors.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the floor by using a vacuum and then using a mop or sponge to wash the surface area. Self leveling compounds work much better on clean surfaces.

    • 2

Apply a primer to the floor before using the leveling compound. Most compounds require this primer to help the mixture stick. The primer is applied using a paint roller or brush and should be allowed to dry for a few hours before applying the leveling compound.

    • 3

Mix the self leveling compound by combining it with water as directed on the individual mix you are using. The mixtures set quickly and you only have 10 to 20 minutes to work with once you add water. Use extremely cold water and a power drill to mix the compound because it can help extend the time you have to work with the mix. You should mix the product until it is thin enough to pour easily out of the bucket. Aim for a loose, soupy consistency.

Pour the mixed compound onto low areas of the floor, and use the trowel to smooth and flatten the compound out across the floor. The mix will even itself out and flatten into a hard plane. Let the mix dry and the floor should be ready for traffic or overlay in about 12 hours
