Laying a Basket Weave Wood Floor

Wood floor boards laid side by side can give a home a warm, elegant feel. A basket weave wood floor creates the appearance of wood boards crossing over and under each other. Homeowners generally choose a single basket weave or a treble basket weave style for wooden flooring. Single basket weave flooring uses square wood tiles and rectangular wood floor boards that are half as wide as the square tiles but two and a quarter times longer. Treble basket weaves use small square wood tiles and rectangular wood boards that are the same width as the square tiles but five times longer.

Instructions

  1. Single Basket Weave

    • 1

Lay down a wood floor board in the left corner of the room for your starting point.

    • 2

Place a wooden square tile next to the vertical rectangular board you laid. The tops of the wooden flooring pieces should be flush.

    • 3

Place a rectangular board vertically next to the square tile you just laid. This board should be the same length as the square wood tiles and the same width as the rectangular boards. You will only need the shorter rectangular lengths around the perimeter of the flooring space.

    • 4

Lay another square wood tile on the other side of the shorter rectangular board.

    • 5

Place a short rectangular board horizontally under the longer rectangular piece you laid in the first step. Continue alternating the square and full-length rectangular boards in the same fashion down the length of the floor.

    • 6

Lay a full-length rectangular wooden board vertically next to the second square wood tile you laid. You will lay the following pattern across the top of the floor: a full-length vertical board, a square tile, a short rectangular board and a square tile.

    • 7

Lay a full-length rectangular wooden board horizontally under the first square wood tile.

    • 8

Place another square tile, a vertical full-length board and another square tile under the rectangular board you previously laid. Continue this pattern across the flooring area. There will always be a lowercase letter T shape between four of the wooden square tiles.

    Treble Basket Weave

    • 9

Lay three rectangular wooden boards horizontally, starting in the middle of your flooring area.

    • 10

Center three vertical wooden boards of the same size under and to the right of the set you previously laid. Continue laying the boards in an alternating fashion down and across the length of the flooring area. The boards will form an uppercase letter T across the floor.

    • 11

Place a small square tile that is the same width as the boards in the gaps that the sets of boards create.
