How to Lay Carpet in a Doorway With Tile

When it comes to installing carpet, there are a number of different ways you can finish off the edges of the room. For carpet that terminates against a wall, you can cut the carpet with a utility knife slightly shy of the actual wall itself because the joint will be covered by a baseboard. However, for transition points such as into a doorway where you are matching a ceramic tile installation that is already in place, you need to ensure that the carpet is cut precisely and glued down so that your transition will last for years to come.

Instructions

Install the rest of your carpet across the entirety of the room before you move to the doorway transition. You want the carpet already stretched out and attached to the tack strips around the perimeter of the room before you attempt to stretch and attach the carpet for the doorway transition, so that you only need to trim up and attach the doorway carpet.

    • 2

Ensure that the doorway transition point is as clean as possible. Use a utility knife to scrape or cut away any excess thinset mortar that might be left behind, so you have a clean floor for installation. Nail down your tack strip roughly half an inch away from the edge of the tile as it terminates into the doorway. Hammer the tack strip down onto the floor.

Apply a layer of carpet glue between the tack strip and the tile termination, so that the edge of the carpet has something to adhere to after it has been attached to the tack strip. Stretch the carpet up over the actual transition point with your lever stretcher, and use the carpet edging tool to cut the carpet precisely so that it fits tight against the tile.

Press the carpet firmly down on top of the tack strips and into the bed of carpet glue. Remove the carpet stretcher and place at least 50 pounds of weight across the doorway transition point to keep the carpet edge firmly pressed into the glue while it dries.
