How to Do Hardwood Flooring at a Doorway

Installing hardwood flooring adds warmth to any room of your home. You can save money by installing a hardwood floor yourself rather than hiring a professional. One problem you may run into when installing your own hardwood floor is how to correctly install it in doorways. Whether you plan to stop your installation once you reach the doorway to an adjacent room or continue laying hardwood throughout adjoining rooms, you must position the flooring properly in doorways to ensure a smooth transition from one room to another.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the existing flooring in the doorway if you have not done so already.

    • 2

Lay the scrap piece of underlayment down in the doorway. Lay the scrap piece of hardwood down directly on top of the underlayment in the doorway.

    • 3

Mark both sides of the door frame with a pencil where the board hits the frame.

    • 4

Press the scrap piece of hardwood against the door frame. Position your saw directly on top of the scrap plank. Cut the door frame away where the plank meets the frame. Do this on both sides of the door frame.

    • 5

Measure the width of the doorway. Cut a wooden floor plank to fit horizontally within the door frame.

    • 6

Install the hardwood plank in the doorway. Provided you measured and cut the door frame correctly, the plank should sit comfortably within the doorway.
