How to Specially Cut Porcelain Tile

Stronger and denser than regular ceramic tile, porcelain tiles need to be cut with specially designed tools. Porcelain is a form of Chinese-invented pottery that was introduced to the West in the 15th century in the form of exquisite vases and dishes, according to Jeffrey Munger and Alice Cooney Frelinghuysen of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In China, porcelain was considered a highly revered luxury item. For flooring, porcelain tile is ideal for high-traffic areas because it's resistant to moisture and wear.

Instructions

    • 1

Place porcelain tile into a professional manual tile cutter if you need a simple cut or to score it. Newer models are designed to cut both ceramic and porcelain tile, but ensure the blade is new or very sharp. These cutters are well-suited for smaller jobs.

    • 2

Mark the lines where you need to cut onto your porcelain tile, using the pencil. Pour water into the appropriate water tray underneath the diamond-bladed wet saw. Always use a new blade when starting a new project.

    • 3

Wear your safety goggles and gloves. Place the tile up against the saw's fence on the sliding saw bed. Align your marks against the blade, turn on the saw and wait for the water to flow over the blade. Water is necessary to cool the blade during the sawing to prevent overheating.

    • 4

Push the tile into the blade while holding the tile on both sides. Feed it slowly and hold the tile until the cut is complete so the tile doesn't break. Generally, the harder the material, the slower the blade should be run.

    • 5

Pull the tile toward you and away from the blade once you are finished. Turn off the wet saw.
