Can You Install Pergo on Stairs?

Laminate flooring offers a good alternative to hardwood floors that require regular maintenance to maintain their appearance. Laminate flooring is attractive, easy to maintain and durable. It is a good option for families with children and pets that have frequent spills and clean-ups. It can be installed both on flat floors and on stairs. Pergo is a well-known brand name in laminate flooring that originated in Sweden in the 1970s.
  1. About Pergo Flooring

    • Pergo laminate flooring consists of several layers that are pressed together to provide different qualities in the finished product. The core layer is a moisture-resistant and sound-reducing substrate. On top of this is placed a high-resolution photograph of woodgrains that simulate the look of hardwood floors. An upper resin layer makes the flooring tough and abrasion-resistant. Together, these materials give Pergo flooring its long-lasting properties and attractive appearance. It also resists scratches, which makes it a good option for stairways that see continuous traffic.

    Installing Pergo Laminate On Stairs

    • To install Pergo laminate on stairs, first remove carpeting or other material on the stairs. Check the stair treads for looseness, unevenness or squeaking. Repair these minor problems before attempting to install the Pergo laminate. Measure the stair treads one at a time and cut the laminate planks to fit each stair tread separately. Leave a sufficient space to install the stair nose at the edge of the step. Measure and cut the planks for each riser as you go. Apply the recommended construction adhesive to the Pergo pieces and lay into place. Install nails at the back of the tread where the risers will cover them. Then, glue and nail in the risers and stairnose pieces.

    Special Pieces for Stairs

    • Pergo offers stair nose units that are used on the edges of stairs to continue the laminate material smoothly over the stair edges. These laminate pieces are used to cover stair edges or the edges of step-downs and allows the flooring to continue smoothly from surface to surface. They are attached with screws and construction adhesive, according to the Pergo website.

    Additional Concerns for Stair Installations

    • Installing Pergo laminate on stairs requires a little more attention to detail than installing on straight, flat surfaces. Existing stairs may have an overhang that must be cut off before installing the Pergo laminate. Alternately, you can fill in the area below the overhang to make it a flat 90-degree perpendicular to accept the stair nose, according to the LaminateFlooringInstalled website. Stairs and risers should be measured very carefully to allow for accurate fitting. Order additional stairnose pieces in case of accidents and problems.
