How to Connect Laminate Flooring Sections

Homeowners installing laminate flooring in their home may want a seamless look throughout their home. Instead of trying to connect laminate flooring into one long run through the home, many homeowners find it easier to install the flooring in sections, then install transition moldings between the rooms. Flooring sections should be spaced within a few inches of each other. Any larger gaps makes it difficult to find a transition piece to fit the area.

Instructions

Calculate how much flooring transition you need to connect the laminate flooring sections. Do this by measuring the length of the area that needs to be connected. Write the measurement down on a piece of paper. Examine the floor to see if you need a reducer transition or a t-molding transition. If the floors are two different heights, you need a reducer. Floors of the same height can be connected with a t-molding transition. Use this information to purchase the flooring transition.

Clean out the space between the two laminate flooring sections. Remove debris and dirt from the space with a vacuum.

    • 3

Cut the transition to the appropriate size using a miter saw. Use the measurements to mark the transition to the correct size.

Apply polyurethane glue or construction adhesive to the bottom of the transition. Space the transition so the bottom of it is 1/4 inch from the flooring. With t-molding, there should be a 1/4-inch space on either side of the bottom portion of the molding. On the reducer molding, you only need the 1/4-inch space right next to the higher-level floor. Set the transition in place and press it down so the glue is touching both the subfloor and the transition.

Wait for the glue to dry for 24 hours before everyday use.
