How to Do Doorways When Laying Laminate Flooring

The doorframes installed in a home are set to a height that allows the door to swing above the originally installed flooring. Unfortunately, the height of laminate flooring often exceeds the height of the original flooring type. To install laminate flooring correctly, the bottom of the doorframe must be raised to allow the flooring to slide under the frame legs. One method of increasing doorframe height does not require removing and reinstalling a door to allow the installation of laminate flooring.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the door. Sweep the area under the door and around each side of the doorframe. Ensure no debris larger than dust sits on the subfloor surrounding the work area.

    • 2

Lay a piece of laminate floor on the subfloor with the finished side of the flooring facing down.

    • 3

Slide the piece of laminate flooring against the wall molding secured to one doorframe leg – both if the piece is long enough. Push down to hold it in place.

    • 4

Set the flat blade of a trim saw on the unfinished side of the laminate flooring. Use a back and forth motion to saw through the pieces of molding. Repeat the cutting process on the other leg of the doorframe.

    • 5

Move the piece of laminate flooring to the other side of the wall. Realign the flooring. Cut the molding from the other side of the doorframe. Continue until all molding sits above the piece of flooring. Cut a straight line across the centerpiece of the doorframe. Ensure the doorframe cut aligns with the molding cuts on either side of the wall.

Sweep the sawdust from the area before installing the laminate flooring.
