How to Attach Rigid Insulation to a Concrete Deck

Installing rigid insulation to a concrete deck is an excellent way to add protection to the exterior area. This is useful if you are enclosing the deck and wish to have it heated and cooled with the rest of your home. However, you should remember that rigid insulation is not designed to withstand regular traffic, and that it should be covered with some type of solid flooring, such as plywood, hardwood flooring or tile.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Roll out 1200 gauge polyethylene plastic over the entire concrete deck. If the deck area is enclosed, the plastic must go to the edge of the deck and up the wall at least six inches. Overlap seams by six inches, taping each seam with foil tape. Also tape along the edges of the plastic where it goes up onto the walls.

    • 2

Begin installing the rigid insulation along the walls or edge of the concrete deck. Work toward the middle of the deck, staggering the pieces of rigid insulation so the joints will not all line up together. Seal each joint with foil tape.

    • 3

Secure the rigid insulation to the concrete deck with concrete nails using a power hammer. Secure the four corners of each panel first, then the center, then put a nail in the center of each edge of the insulation. Once all the insulation panels are secured, finished flooring can be installed.
