How to Cut Basement Floor for Sump Pump

Sump pumps are valuable machines around the home because they move excess amounts of water from low areas, such as a basement, to a more appropriate drainage location. The pump sits in a hole and sucks up water so it flows through a tube to its final destination. To install a sump pump in a basement floor, home owners must cut out a deep hole. Since basement floors are often concrete, this requires heavy-duty demolition equipment.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the sump basin on the basement floor in the area where you want to cut out the hole. The sump basin looks like a round trash can with two open ends. Trace around the outside of the basin using a permanent marker to designate the proper hole size. Move the basin out of the way.

    • 2

Wear ear protection, eye protection, a dust mask and work gloves during the demolition process. Insert a spade bit into a demolition hammer, or a jack hammer.

    • 3

Place the hammer bit directly in the center of the marked area on the basement floor. Spread your feet away from the bit and squeeze the handle trigger to begin cutting through the concrete. Continue until the basement floor cracks and crumbles within the marked area and release the trigger to stop the hammer.

Grasp the large chunks of concrete with your hands and place them into a five-gallon bucket for disposal. Scoop out the remainder of the concrete using a shovel.

    • 5

Measure the depth of the sump basin using a tape measure to determine the depth of the hole needed. Dig out the soil from the floor hole with the shovel until you achieve the proper depth. Test the depth of the hole by sliding the basin into it periodically.
