How to Cut 45-Degree Transitions for Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring is installed by many homeowners who are looking for durable, attractive flooring at an inexpensive price. The laminate finish can take on the appearance of wood, tile or natural stone. A major benefit of a laminate floor is that you will need very few specialized tools to install it. Two critical tools are a miter box and a miter saw for cutting 45-degree angles for transitions.

Instructions

Lay the plank on the floor. Mark the low point where the angle begins on the board and the high point where the angle ends. Draw a line between the two with the square and a pencil. If there is no room on the floor for the plank, take careful measurements of the available space and where the cut needs to be with the tape, then transfer them to the plank.

Place the flat board in the miter box. Line up the two marked points with the low and high cutting slots in the box. If they don't line up, you have measured the board or the angle incorrectly, and you will have to reexamine the board and remeasure it.

Place the saw in the slots and pull it slowly across the wood, establishing an initial cut on the top of the laminate. Slow and steady is the key to making a good clean cut. Continue to saw back and forth with a smooth, slow motion until you are all the way through the plank.
