Instructions

    • 1

Remove the stamped concrete floor with a jackhammer. Begin at the perimeter of the floor, and work in toward the center, removing the chunks of concrete as you go. If the floor is adjacent to a wall, remove the last 6 to 8 inches with a hammer and chisel so you don't accidentally damage the wall with the jackhammer.

    • 2

Rake the gravel base in the area where you removed the stamped concrete to smooth it.

    • 3

Add more gravel to the base if needed, and rake it smooth. Determine if you need more gravel by measuring the distance between the gravel and the top of the hole. The pavers or bricks will be laid on a 1-inch layer of sand, and must be flush with the surrounding ground.

    • 4

Add the layer of sand on top of the gravel, then smooth it with a 2-by-4 board.

    • 5

Install edge restraints by placing them around the perimeter of the hole and driving stakes through them. The stakes are included with the edge restraints.

    • 6

Lay the bricks or pavers onto the sand, beginning at one end of the hole. Use a wet saw to cut the bricks or pavers to fit if needed. Stagger the pavers in every other row.

    • 7

Run over the bricks or pavers with a mechanical plate compactor.

    • 8

Spread sand on top of the bricks or pavers, then sweep the sand into gaps between them.

    • 9

Cover the bricks or pavers with a sand-binding sealant, following the instructions on the packaging.
