How to Install a Laminate Floor: Semicircle Fireplace

As ideal as it would be to have a square room without any obstacles for your laminate job, it doesn't always work out that way. Cutting around stairs, pipes, fireplaces and other obstacles is part of the task, and it's not always as difficult as it may seem. For cutting curves, the only tool you'll need is a jigsaw (sometimes known as a sabre saw), although a router will do the trick -- even better sometimes. When using a jigsaw, try to use one that's made to be precise, especially if you're not experienced; not all jigsaws are simple to use and some are lighter, shake less and perform with greater accuracy.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay down a large piece of paper around the fireplace and cut it to the shape of the fireplace. If the fireplace is large, use several sheets of paper to accomplish this.

    • 2

Lay down the floor in straight rows until you get to the fireplace.

    • 3

Lay the first plank that will go around the fireplace on the template and mark the backside of the plank with a dark pencil where it needs to be cut to fit. Remember to allow for the appropriate gap for a floating floor, typically 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch (refer to your manufacturer's instructions).

    • 4

Cut the plank with the jigsaw along the line you marked on the backside. If you are unsure, cut it a little longer, dry-fit the piece in and then cut small strips around the curve until it fits properly.

    • 5

Put the piece in place as you have the rest of the floor.

    • 6

Continue this process for the rest of the floor.
