Can a Pergo Floor Be Installed on an Uninsulated Porch?

Pergo flooring is a durable laminate flooring that is low-maintenance and resistant to moisture and stains. It is available in a variety of tones and colors so that you can easily match it to your home's decor and style. Although you may be able to install Pergo flooring to your uninsulated outdoor porch, you may encounter some unexpected surprises if you do.
  1. General Information

    • Pergo is a laminate flooring product that consists of multiple layers of materials to provide a durable base. The first layer is a surface protector that protects against scratches and scuffs. The second layer consists of core papers for a realistic hardwood look. The third layer consists of a high-density fiber (HDF) board, which makes the flooring dent-resistant. A core backing makes up the last layer. Some styles of Pergo flooring come with an attached underlayment. Pergo flooring is traditionally intended for indoor use only.

    Insulation

    • Pergo flooring does not require an insulated floor for installation. If your porch floor consists of wood floors or wood subfloors, you don't need any type of underlayment. Subfloors must be relatively flat in which one portion of the floor should be no more than three-sixteenths inch higher than any other point on the flooring. If your porch flooring is composed of other materials, such as terrazzo, ceramic tile or concrete, you will need to install a underlayment that serves as a moisture barrier.

    Moisture

    • The main reason why Pergo flooring is not intended for outdoor use is the presence of moisture. Pergo flooring is moisture-resistant and can even be installed in bathrooms. However, Pergo flooring is not built to endure moisture resting on top of it for 30 minutes. It is also not recommended for use in a room with a sump pump or drain. If water gets underneath the Pergo flooring, it can cause the flooring to become damaged, and mildew can grow on it.

    Installation

    • Pergo flooring is a floating floor installation. Pergo floors are installed in a tongue-and-groove method in which each plank of flooring is glued to the next plank. The flooring "floats" over the existing flooring since it is not glued, stapled or nailed to the existing flooring. Pergo flooring expands and contracts like a wood floor due to fluctuations in temperature or humidity, so it must be installed with 1/4 inch of space for expansion.

    Considerations

    • The Pergo company states that the flooring product is only intended for indoor use. If you use it for an outdoor use, you may eliminate the warranty on your flooring. However, if you live in an area with little rain or moisture, you may be able to use the flooring on your uninsulated outdoor porch. Additionally, if you have a closed or screened-in porch, your floors may be safe from moisture damage. If you insist on using the flooring for an outdoor application, take the same precautions as someone who installs Pergo flooring in a bathroom. Seal the floors and fill the expansion gap around the perimeter of the area with a sealant.
