How to Grind Slate With a Concrete Surface Machine

Slate floors have a natural, rustic quality and possess a color range that encompasses golds, grays, blues and reds. Over time and a long history of heavy foot traffic, a slate floor can grow dull and develop blemishes on its surface. Renew a slate floor by resurfacing it. Resurfacing slate removes a shallow layer to make the stones look fresh. Resurface slate using a stone-approved concrete floor grinding machine.

Instructions

    • 1

Equip the grinder with a medium-grit diamond grinding disc.

    • 2

Mist the slate floor with water.

    • 3

Set the concrete disc in the rear position. Start the machine. Lower the concrete disc until it spins against the floor.

    • 4

Move the grinder in a slow side-to-side motion while taking it across the room in successive rows.

    • 5

Turn off and unplug the grinder. Switch the grinding disc for a slightly higher grit and go over the floor once more.

    • 6

Continue switching to higher grits and going over the floor. Finish the floor with a fine-grit disc.
