How to Caulk Laminate Around a Doorway

Laminate is a floor product that can be installed nearly anywhere in the home. If the laminate is installed in a wet area such as a bathroom, or if it is transitioning to another flooring material, caulking the installation edges or between the two materials may be needed. One of the most important areas to caulk is around a doorway where the transition most likely occurs.

Instructions

    • 1

Place masking tape on the laminate floor one-thirty-second inch away from the area to be caulked, running parallel to the gap. The masking tape facilitates an easier clean up after the caulking is complete.

    • 2

Cut the tip of the caulk tube off at a 45-degree angle. Do not cut the tip larger than the width of the gap you are caulking. This prevents too much caulk from being released.

    • 3

Insert the caulk tube’s tip into the gun’s end and tighten the plunger on the gun’s back so it applies pressure to the tube’s back.

    • 4

Beginning at the edge of the area to be caulked, squeeze a thin bead of silicone caulk along the gap. Keeping the gun moving as you depress the trigger keeps the bead running continuously along the area to be caulked.

    • 5

Clean the caulk by dipping your index finger into water and smooth the caulk into place with it.
