Smooth rubber tiles that lack interlocking edges around the perimeter require appropriate glue or tape for installation. Polyurethane is the common adhesive for rubber floor, and is also used for wood floor, laminate and cork. It can be installed over cement, plywood and asphalt, among other surfaces. Acrylic latex emulsions may also be used for applying rubber flooring. Some adhesives are available as sprays, making installation a bit easier. Double-sided carpet tape offers quick adhesion and can be used as well.
Before installing rubber tile, ensure the surface of your subfloor is clean and free of debris. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for planning the layout and determine whether or not you will need to cut the tiles to fit. Once you know how the room will be laid out, you are ready to apply the adhesive. Start at the end furthest away from the door. Spray or spread the adhesive as directed by the manufacturer, and press tiles firmly into place, making sure to displace any air bubbles. For interlocking tiles, adhesive throughout the floor is not necessary. To ensure the tiles don't budge, however, it's a good idea to apply double-sided carpet tape or a urethane-based glue to keep things in place.
Rubber flooring is popular in public places where loud noise and tough impact is undesirable. With rubber flooring, it’s easier to clean up messes and avert unsightly chipping. Rubber is naturally durable and resilient, so it will last under tough impact and resist molding. Many rubber tile products are made to be skid-free, so they offer a level of safety that more slippery floor products do not.
Rubber tile isn't just for gyms; its a great addition to any home. You can use rubber flooring in your kitchen for a durable floor that’s easy to maintain. Rubber is perfect for covering the floor of your child's playroom because it will be easy on young hands, knees and feet. Because of its skid-resistance, it offers a higher level of safety as well.
