How to Install Pergo Under Baseboard Heat

Baseboard heaters and other obstructions interfere with the installation of Pergo laminate flooring. The interlocking seams used to connect flooring planks do not allow it to slide under wall-mounted obstructions. Trying to cut a plank to allow it to slide past the edges of the baseboard heater will cause exposed cuts that will reduce the beauty of the finished flooring. The correct installation procedure doesn't leave any exposed cuts but requires more work than trying to cut flooring around the heater.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the thermostat controlling the baseboard heater to the "Off" position, or its coldest position. Flip the breaker to the "Off" position to turn off power to the thermostat. Allow the baseboard to cool for 30 to 45 minutes.

    • 2

Grip the bottom of the front baseboard cover with both holds. Pull the bottom of the cover away from the wall. Lift up to release the cover from the heater. Set it aside.

    • 3

Pull the electrical wires away from the baseboard body. Turn the wire nuts, which connect the heater wires to the house wiring, counterclockwise. Pull the wires apart. Secure one lock nut onto each exposed house wire. Wrap electrical tape over each wire nut to hold them in place.

    • 4

Locate the Phillips head screws running through the back of the heater and into the wall. Turn each screw counterclockwise. Set them aside. Gently pull the heater from the wall and remove it from the room.

    • 5

Install the Pergo floor as described by the installation instructions. Leave a 1/4-inch gap between the edge of the last floor plank and the wall. Do not install the molding against the wall where the baseboard heater was removed.

    • 6

Hold the baseboard heater 3 inches from the wall where it was removed. Push the house wires through the rear opening of the heater body. Push it tight to the wall. Run one removed Phillips head screw through each mounting hole with the Phillips screwdriver.

    • 7

Remove the electrical tape from the wire nuts. Unthread the wire nut from the end of each house wire. Connect each house wire to the corresponding heater wire. Push the heater cover over the front of the heater fins.

    • 8

Install the floor molding on the wall containing the heater according to the manufacturer's installation instructions.
