How to Separate Pipe When Pouring Concrete

Concrete can be poured directly over pipes; If poured slowly and deliberately, the concrete will form around the pipes and dry in place. While doing so is possible, this method causes the pipes to become encased in the concrete slab, preventing the pipes' removal or repair if necessary. Separating pipes from a concrete slab saves time and money on future repairs. Separating the piping from the concrete allows you to access the pipe by removing a small amount of the concrete if the need arises for repair.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay insulation over the pipes. Unroll rolled insulation over the top of the pipes. Cut the insulation to size to wrap around each individual pipe.

    • 2

Tape the insulation in place. Wrap the insulation completely around each pipe and wrap duct tape around to hold it in place. Place a strip of tape every 3 feet to secure the insulation.

    • 3

Cut welded wire mesh to fit over the pipes. Bend the wire to form a flat tent over the top of the pipes. Be sure the wire touches the floor on either side of the pipes.

    • 4

Frame and pour the slab. Pour the concrete slowly over the welded mesh wire to cover.
