How to Build a Band Joist

A band joist, also known as a rim joist, is a wooden or metal end piece that forms the side ends of an indoor or outdoor subfloor. The subfloor is made up of joists, support beams or skids, a header or ledger board and rim/band joists. Rim/band joists are the same size as the main joists that make up the entire subfloor. According to Shed King, you will typically need just two rim joists on each side of the subfloor.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the walls or existing subfloor with a measuring tape. This measurement will give you an idea of how long your band joists will need to be. Cut the joists to size using a saw.

    • 2

Lay the band joist against the sill plates on both sides of the floor. Attach the joist hanger to the band joist by drilling 1 ½-inch wood screws through the pre-drilled holes on the joist hanger until they go through the sill plates.

    • 3

Check over the subfloor to make sure the band joists are securely fitted.
