How to Install & Glue Down Bruce 14-Inch Wood Flooring

Bruce hardwood floors are designed with a lock-and-fold installation system, but these boards could be glued down for a more secure installation. You must have a clean plywood subfloor in place for this installation method to work properly. A 400-square foot room will take approximately 12 hours to complete from start to finish using this technique. If you are sensitive to chemical fumes, this method of installation is not recommended.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the trim and baseboards in the room with a pry bar. Pry gently to avoid cracking the wood. Place the trim aside.

    • 2

      Roll out your underlayment.

    • 3

Place a shim along the wall in your starting corner. This will allow for proper expansion of the wood.

    • 4

Coat the back of the first plank with urethane adhesive using a trowel. Spread on a thin layer to the wood.

    • 5

Place the first plank, tongue side towards the wall, in the first corner. Press it down firmly.

    • 6

Continue laying down the first row of planks. Place a shim next to the wall for each plank. Apply the adhesive and fit the plank into place. Cut the end board to fit with a circular saw.

    • 7

Apply adhesive to the next plank in the second row and lock it into place. Insert the tongue of the next plank into the groove of the first plank. Lock it in and press the plank down.

    • 8

Continue laying down the planks until the room is finished. Alternate the size of the planks as you work to avoid having even seams in the room. The last row may need to be trimmed to fit width-wise with a circular saw.

    • 9

Remove the shims and replace the wood trim in the room. Hammer the trim back into place.
