How to Install a Laminate Stair Nose Over Ceramic

Many homeowners choose to cover ceramic tile instead of removing it when it gets outdated. One of the easiest ways to cover ceramic tile is with laminate flooring. Laminate flooring is easy to install over ceramic flooring that is in good condition. If the ceramic flooring extends down steps in your home, you will need to glue a laminate stair nose over the ceramic tiles. You can simply glue the stair nose in place instead of nailing it down. The glue will not damage the ceramic tile beneath and cause problems the same way nails would.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean off the ceramic stairs. Vacuum the stairs and then wipe down the ceramic area with a damp cloth. Allow the area to dry completely.

    • 2

Measure the ceramic stair with a measuring tape or ruler. Mark the same measurements onto the laminate stair nose.

    • 3

Cut the laminate stair nose to the correct size with a miter saw.

    • 4

Apply a snakelike bead of construction adhesive on the back of the laminate stair nose. Turn the stair nose over and press it into place on top of the ceramic stair.

    • 5

Install the laminate flooring out from the stair nose. Place a piece of tape over the seam between the stair nose and the flooring. The tape will keep the stair nose level while the construction adhesive dries.
