How to Match Up Stair Carpets With Laminate Flooring

If you've mastered the art of putting down your laminate floor throughout the main portions of the room, the only thing left is applying the trims and transition pieces to finish your floor off. There are various transition bars and trim options to finish your floor -- some of which transition between two different types of flooring or cover the edges of stairs for a finished look. When transitioning between a laminate floor and carpeted stairs, you come across two issues -- you are going over the lip of the stair but also coming to a flooring of a different type and height.

Instructions

  1. Carpet Goes Over Top of Stairs

    • 1

Leave a gap of approximately 1 1/8 inch between the laminate plank and the carpeted edge.

    • 2

Lay the end molding -- carpet transition -- to determine the correct placement of the trim track. Mark the correct position with a pencil.

    • 3

Install the trim track within the gap. For wood floors, use screws; for concrete floors, use concrete nails or a concrete adhesive.

    • 4

Cut the trim piece and track to the appropriate length for the carpet transition.

    • 5

Angle the trim into the trim track and gently push the trim into the track from one side to the other.

    Carpet Ends at Top

    • 6

Cut the edge of the carpet to just below the top lip of the stairs.

    • 7

Lay the stair nose on top of the first stair against the edge.

    • 8

Measure and cut the stair nose to length.

    • 9

Apply construction adhesive to the stair nose and apply to the top of the stair.

    • 10

Start laying the laminate flooring from the stair nose.
