How to Edge Bamboo Flooring With a Router

Bamboo flooring can serve as an attractive alternative to carpet, hardwood or tile. The warmth of bamboo, combined with its durability, adds to the aesthetic functionality of a dining room, family room, den or kitchen. When installing bamboo flooring, you need to leave a quarter-inch expansion gap between the flooring and the wall around the perimeter of the room, which may necessitate trimming the last course of bamboo before you install it. A table saw is the ideal tool for cutting the flooring, but a router can be used in a pinch.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the space between the previous course of bamboo flooring and the wall, using a measuring tape. Subtract a quarter-inch from this measurement to determine the necessary width of the final course.

    • 2

Mark the necessary width at both ends of the bamboo flooring plank. Place the plank on a work table, with the marks even with the table edge.

    • 3

Place a metal straightedge on the bamboo plank and align it with the width marks. Clamp the straightedge and the bamboo plank to the table with C-clamps at each end.

    • 4

Set the router bit to the depth of the bamboo plank. Turn on the router and run the bit along the length of the bamboo, using the metal straightedge as a guide.

    • 5

Sand the cut edge of the bamboo plank lightly with a palm sander to smooth it.
